A hypnagogic jerk, often referred to as a hypnic jerk, occurs as an involuntary muscle contraction during the transition from wakefulness to sleep. This phenomenon is typically associated with the initial stages of falling asleep, when the body is moving from consciousness into the lighter stages of sleep. The sudden jerk can startle the person awake, and it may be accompanied by a sensation of falling or a vivid imagery experience.

Although many people experience hypnagogic jerks, their exact cause isn't fully understood; they are thought to be a normal part of the sleep onset process. The association with muscle spasms differentiates them from other sleep disturbances or states.

The other options pertain to different aspects of sleep but do not accurately describe what a hypnagogic jerk entails. For example, a state of deep sleep refers to a later phase of the sleep cycle that is characterized by slow-wave sleep and does not involve muscle jerking.
